Most people don’t waste any more time on traffic on their way to and from work. There’s no point in spending the whole day in the office. Besides, not many people have an actual office anymore — or a full-time job.
The job market has significantly changed, and many jobs have disappeared. Robot cleaners are sweeping streets, working 24/7. Car-sharing and self-driving cars have replaced taxi and truck drivers, and there are no police officers monitoring roads. Robots always follow rules, and there are cameras at every corner anyway. Shops don’t need as many cashiers, and the same goes for schools and teachers. Restaurants make do perfectly without live waiters.
People who no longer have a job have a choice. They can receive basic income that provides for a very humble lifestyle. Or they can learn to do something new that hasn’t been automated yet. But competition for the remaining jobs is high: Well-qualified work requires constant learning
, and not everyone can do it. Demonstrations and protests of people who have nothing to do have become an everyday occurrence.
