Sao Paulo 2030
By 2030, the government of São Paulo has gotten serious about tackling the problem of overpopulation in poorer areas of the city. Neighborhoods with affordable modern housing are starting to pop up, where the lion’s share of passenger traffic falls to the subway: over the past 15 years, the most densely populated city in the southern hemisphere has seen a doubling of the number of stations.
Officials, concerned about air quality, are greening the city. They place plants not only along roads but also directly on buildings. Another environmental initiative is the social program for artists, who create works of art from recyclable debris. The city authorities hope that this will attract public attention to the problem of recycling and waste treatment.
Brazil is a five-time winner of the FIFA World Cup. The country’s love affair with soccer can be traced even to its architecture. The construction of a stadium crowned with a soccer ball is yet further proof of this — city residents themselves chose the unique motif in a vote.
