Universities in their current form will cease to exist

It is the year 2050, and education has completely moved to an on-demand format. Universities in their current form have ceased to exist and will be retrofitted as makerspaces and "application-based learning" spaces. Universities will adapt to this incubator-style structure, so that students from diverse backgrounds (engineering, humanities, arts, science, business) will be able to come together in a transdisciplinary format to solve real-world problems and work on subjects that they are truly passionate about. Their admission into universities will depend on the subject and how they plan to achieve their goals. Grades will not be a prerequisite as on-demand learning has perpetuated to such an extent that one can instantly gain knowledge through various sources of learning (e-learning, e-peer-to-peer learning, e-mentorship, e-guidance, etc.).

Mihai Vasile Not that this wouldn`t be great. It`s just that the current educational institutions do all in their power to keep the structures as they are.

Bhargav kanodiya It should not be like this because education in class is more valuable and students will take it more seriously in class only.

Becca Pramheda ON th one hand, I think it would be great to be able to access this type of education system but I also think about how will it be profitable for universities and will we still have class differences ? I would love for something like this to happen!

MascoJr If we ever think about the future, I wonder will our situation be like our grandparents..not knowing how to move on par with the technology. But that will not be the case. Since lack of knowledge is now out of the question. Many sources and resources mentioned above will change education system for once and for all.

Vanesa Hernández It sounds very interesting, I think that if it is possible that it happens cause education is something that we are innovating and perhaps we will not only observe this phenomenon in universities and we will also see it in lower degrees, we could also find more solutions to current problems

Eric Poyntz its a great thought, I do think that we are moving away from in class on elementary , secondary education and maybe some post-secondary. But Universities are still profit centers at least in North America. I would say we could maybe see them began to move away from that sort of revenue by around 2100 at the earliest but I don't see that happening in 30 years time

Geetika Shimpi Agreed. Infact the incubator style structure would be taking shape from initial years of the education system.

Gerardo Gutierrez This currently is dividing society more, hopefully it will cease to happen by eventually letting those who are off the web get in and catch up, but some of them might not be able to do so and will fall behind and spiral into poverty. Also I do not like the idea of this leading to claiming property over freedom of thought and freedom of expression or privatizing them and their products
